Gijs Bakker Lecture

Gijs BakkerEmbraceNecklace

Gijs Bakker is a pioneering figure in the realm of contemporary jewellery
and industrial design. In 1993 Bakker founded the Dutch collective Droog
Design, with design critic Renny Ramakers. In 2009 the Taiwan Design Council
appointed him Creative Director for Yii Taiwan, his remit to create stronger,
sustainable links between local craft traditions and contemporary design
practice while increasing the design profile of Taiwan internationally. The
retrospective exhibition Gijs Bakker and Jewellery toured museums and
galleries worldwide and Bakker features in the Design Museum’s winter 2012
exhibition of contemporary jewellery, Unexpected Pleasures.

“Bakker mentioned how important it is to be aware of personal and global culture and one’s background.  This gives you as an artist or designer the grounding to be able to understand your own work better.  Also to be able to produce a timeless piece, according to Bakker one has to focus on the idea or concept, as they are timeless.  Styles and trends change but ideas are concrete.”– Simeï Iréne Snyman, BA Jewellery Design year 3
